Watershed Management Group & Partners: Neighborhood Green-Infrastructure Open House, October 21, 2010 – Tucson AZ

October 21, 2010 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Watershed Management Group (WMG) a Tucson-based non-profit organization, will be hosting a Green Infrastructure Showcase and Open House on Thursday, October 21, from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Salpointe Catholic High School, at 545 E Copper Street in Tucson (meet in cafeteria; outdoor tour at Copper and Cherry streets, south side of school). This event will showcase the cutting-edge green infrastructure for Southwest neighborhoods implemented at Salpointe High with the help of WMG, Samos Neighborhood residents, and the City of Tucson.

Green infrastructure refers to practices that mimic or enhance natural processes to retain and use stormwater. This approach seeks to address common stormwater management issues through strategies like water harvesting, removal or shading of impermeable surfaces, urban forestry, bicycle and pedestrian improvements, and the creation or enhancement of greenways, parks, and wildlife corridors. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, “forward-thinking communities in water-limited regions are increasingly recognizing green infrastructure as a cost-effective approach not only to stormwater management, but to water conservation as well.” Green infrastructure provides a number of environmental, economic and social benefits, including beautification, reduced flooding and infrastructure maintenance costs, and water quality and habitat improvement.

These techniques will be on display at the Green Infrastructure Showcase and Open House, where activities will include an introduction to WMG’s Green Streets–Green Neighborhoods program, an outdoor tour of Salpointe’s new green infrastructure, and a Q&A session with a panel of local experts.

To RSVP, please contact Tory Syracuse at 396-3266 or tsyracuse@watershedmg.org. For further information, contact Tory or visit www.watershedmg.org/green-streets.
