October 8, 2010

Local Non-Profit Offers Unique Opportunity in Sustainability to Tucson Schools
Watershed Management Group (WMG), a Tucson-based non-profit organization, is currently accepting applications for funds to implement rain garden projects at three Tucson-area schools for the 2010-2011 school year.
The Schoolyard Program, a WMG program with funding assistance by the US Department of Fish and Wildlife, will emphasize the creation of native-habitat areas on campuses and will implement water-harvesting techniques through hands-on activities, including the creation of a rain garden.
Topics such as the water cycle, water conservation, rainwater and greywater harvesting, native gardening, pollinators, and monitoring of systems will be addressed via classroom and outdoor activities over the course of the program. Students and teachers will have the opportunity to learn valuable skills for rainwater harvesting and will increase their awareness of the crucial role water plays in a desert environment.

Applications and full details on the program are now available on WMG’s website at www.watershedmg.org. For more information on the program, please contact Tory Syracuse at tsyracuse@watershedmg.org or 520-396-3266.
