Turning Scarcity into Abundance: The Integrated Harvest of Rain, Sun and Community
This inspiring presentation shares eight universal principles of water harvesting along with simple strategies that turn water scarcity into water abundance. They empower you to create integrated water-sustainable landscape plans at home and throughout your community. Rainwater harvesting is the process of capturing rain and making the most of it as close as possible to where it falls. Greywater harvesting is the process of directing water from household sink, bathtub, shower, and washing machine drains into the soils of the landscape where the water is naturally filtered and reused to generate more on-site resources. The two work hand in hand, and can reduce our water consumption by 30 to 50%! You’ll see examples enhancing local food security, passively cooling cities in summer, reducing costs of living and energy consumption, controlling erosion, averting flooding, reviving dead waterways, minimizing water pollution, building community, creating celebration, and more.

Applying the Principles of Water Harvesting:
Using Rainwater, Greywater & A/C Condensate in the landscape
taught by Brad Lancaster

April 6 & 7, 2009
Phoenix, Arizona

THIS TSA WORKSHOP IS DESIGNED FOR:
• Anyone from an organization who would like to learn how to capture and utilize rainwater, greywater & air conditioning condensate for multi-use landscaping
• The following organization can benefit from this training: Federal, State, & Local Governments, Housing Agencies, Schools, Casinos, Parks Departments, National Park Service, Federal Government Agencies and Private Businesses

The availability of water in most communities is limited, and what is available can be expensive. Many communities are plagued with some type of drought situation to the point where they must limit the use of water for irrigation, washing vehicles, and other elective water uses. The irony is that the precious commodity of rainwater is routinely wasted in most communities, including the ones that have limited water use. Local communities need to turn water scarcity into water abundance, which can be easily accomplished by implementing the core principles that are covered in this training session. Using rainwater to supplement water usage saves money, while helping the environment, which is a Win-Win end result for everyone. In addition, water-harvesting strategies double as flood control strategies reducing flood threats and erosion in wet seasons

The major goal for this workshop is to have the participants embrace and implement in their communities and housing developments the principles of water harvesting learned in this workshop. Participants will learn the process of harvesting rainwater and how to actually implement it on their properties. Actual case studies will be presented, which will be supplemented with “hands-on” activities that will allow workshop participants to gain a thorough understanding of the process of water harvesting and how to make it happen in their communities.

During this interactive workshop, an extensive display of photos and videos that show actual water harvesting applications will be shown for workshop participants to evaluate, critique, and discuss with the workshop leader.

All workshop participants will receive a copy of the workshop leader’s important and timely book, “Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands & Beyond: Volume 1 (Guiding Principles to Welcome Rain into your Life & Landscape),” which will be used as a workbook during the workshop. Volume 1 is the core of a 3-volume guide about how to conceptualize, design, and implement sustainable water harvesting systems for homes, landscapes, and communities. TSA certificates will be presented to everyone who attends this training.

A G E N D A
Both Days, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

MAJOR TOPICS THAT WILL BE COVERED DURING THE WORKSHOP:

1. Introduction to rainwater harvesting – why you should do it
2. The eight principles of successful water harvesting
3. Integrating energy & water conservation strategies – do more with less
4. Examples of successful rainwater harvesting applications
5. Understanding the three golden elevations of water harvesting topography
6. Use of different elevation tools for site work
7. Taking advantage of passive solar principles in conjunction with rainwater
harvesting to reduce utility bills
8. Creating appropriate native plant pallets
9. Creating a living air conditioner for your property
10. Advice for purchasing the best and most practical products for water harvesting
11. Creating an on-site water budget for a property
12. Getting water harvesting grants & tax credits
13. Calculating a payback period related to your investment
14. Basic principles of greywater harvesting & sizing of household systems
15. Case studies for participants to apply the knowledge they just gained
16. Hands-on site assessment – Bring your site plans to discover what potentials you have
17. Field trip on the property to assess rainwater harvesting potentials
18. Round table discussions regarding how harvesting rain water can work in your area

WORKSHOP LEADER: This TSA workshop will be presented by Brad Lancaster, who has taught, designed and consulted on the sustainable design systems of permaculture and integrated rainwater systems since 1993. He lives on a thriving 1/8 – acre urban permaculture site that he created in downtown Tucson, Arizona. Brad is one with the earth and his environment. He actually lives what he writes about and teaches every day. Brad’s down-to-earth teaching approach, blended with the individual attention he gives to every workshop participant makes learning the processes of harvesting rainwater interesting, exciting, and fun. Brad’s web site is www.HarvestingRainwater.com.

Urban Habitat
Tucson Audubon’s Urban Habitat Program is part of a larger urban-oriented initiative designed to reconcile the needs of people and wildlife through the enlightened design of urban and exurban spaces. The Urban Habitat Program seeks to create habitat for birds and other wildlife in yards, neighborhoods, parks, commercial spaces, and along roadways. It is motivated by the desire to support and increase wildlife populations, increase wildlife appreciation, and beautify the metropolitan landscape. Research based on the Audubon Christmas Bird Counts and the Tucson Bird Count suggests that even populations of relatively common birds are now declining, particularly in the more densely inhabited central Tucson area.

Wildlife-oriented Landscape Design
While some home and campus owners may create habitats themselves, it is likely that many will engage designers and installers to create and implement these designs. The Wildlife Landscape Design Certification Course will have, as one of its outcomes, certification to install a Tucson Audubon Landscape. The course will train landscape designers to create landscapes that not only meet traditional landscaping goals, but also provide food, shelter and nesting opportunities for birds, and that provide for the needs of other small urban wildlife (arthropods, reptiles, amphibians, small mammals).

The course will link program designers with suppliers of nursery plants to ensure that we complete the circle between concept and installation.

Course Format
The course will consist of seven meetings on consecutive Saturday mornings (9-11 a.m.) and Wednesday evenings (7-9 p.m.). The first class meeting will be on Saturday January 10, 2009. Meetings will continue every Wednesday and Saturday through Saturday January 31. Wednesday evening meetings will be held at the Tucson Audubon Society offices in the Historic YWCA, 738 N. 5th Ave. Saturday meetings will be held at other locations to be determined, based on the availability of natural and landscaped reference sites. The final Saturday will be a field trip.

A plant list, an optional reading list, and other useful materials will be provided as part of the cost of the course. The course will need a minimum of 8 students, but will be limited to a maximum of 20.

Turning Water Scarcity into Water Abundance - The Integrated Harvest of Water, Sun, and Community

Brad Lancaster will present on how to turn water scarcity into water abundance with eight universal principles of water harvesting along with simple effective strategies. The principles empower you to create integrated water-sustainable landscape plans at home and throughout your community. Stormwater harvesting directs street runoff into street-side water-harvesting earthworks to passively irrigate shading street trees. The three work hand in hand, and can reduce our water consumption by 30 to 50%! You’ll see examples enhancing local food security, passively cooling cities in summer, reducing costs of living and energy consumption, controlling erosion, averting flooding, reviving dead waterways, minimizing water pollution, building community, creating celebration, and more.

In the Australian Outback everyone does it. In the Sonoran Desert the rain in vain falls mainly down the drain. See how this bounty is harvested at a housing co-op, on neighborhood streets, in urban homes and in a community garden. Calculate how much water can be collected off of your roof and find out how you can divert and store rainwater. This tour is co-sponsored by the Tucson Botanical Gardens. Brad Lancaster of the Sonoran Permaculture Guild and author of Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond (www.harvestingrainwater.com) is the instructor.

We will begin with a dynamic power point presentation on rainwater harvesting then go visit the sites, carpooling in vans.

How can rainwater be harvested within a landscape in a way that is both practical and beautiful – and legal? Join landscaping professionals and experts from around the region to hear how others are using water creatively and greatly improving efficiency and incorporating natural habitat in landscape designs. Engage in a discussion of Colorado’s quirky, complicated water laws. Hear examples of how you can take advantage of what’s currently allowed in our state to use water sustainably in the landscape, and discuss what it would take to change existing water laws.

This full day program will take place at Denver Botanic Gardens and will include:
• keynote presentation by Brad Lancaster, author of two award-winning volumes on Rainwater Harvesting for Drylands and Beyond (www.harvestingrainwater.com). Brad was recently featured on NPR’s Morning Edition for his creative approaches to rainwater use in the landscape.
• a panel discussion including viewpoints from water providers, regulators and users (including experts in law, engineering, in-stream flows, pollution, and representatives from agriculture and the nursery profession)
• lunch-time roundtables hosted by the panelists
• case studies of landscapes that creatively incorporate rainwater and/or grey water use to create more ecological, sustainable sites

Registration is limited, so sign up early! Fee is $75 pre-registered, $90 at the door, $25 for students with valid ID. $10 for optional box lunch.

The link to register is www.botanicgardens.org - go to the calendar page, find the event under “February,” and register there.
